Headcanon:

Fleetway is after Sonic in an attempt to take control of his body to wipe out his friends and then leave Sonic to deal with the thought that he had done that. He wants to see Sonic crumble so that he can swoop in a claim Sonic as his. (see it friend or demon- whatevs). The problem is, Sonic can't see Fleetway, only when he's unconscious, So he cannot defend himself.

However, EXE is the only one who can, and he's the one who knows what Fleetway is planing. So X took the duty upon himself to protect Sonic from his demonic self- but Sonic doesnt know this and is still repulsed by EXE- So sadly X must lurk around him to make sure he's okay at all times.

But Fleetway has one special advantage over EXE. Fleetway is the only one who can inflict damage to X that will take much longer to heal that a regular wound- as he regenerative system cannot handle the amounts of black/dark energy Fleetway harbors within himself.

"Pitty your so weak and I have to kill you~ you are rather dashing~" Fleetway smirked.
"Feh" EXE grabbed the hand that was aiming for his throat, "Save it."

"Aw, you dont want to play anymore?"

"This is a game to you?!" X snarled, struggling to keep the hand of Fleetway at bay, he sunk his claws in. "You will never harm Sonic, ya' hear me!"
"And what are you going to do~" the yellow demon sang, "He hates you, from head to toe."
